Grieving is tough. How do I do it?

First of all, yes, grieving is tough.

Don’t be afraid to give yourself a little credit for what you’re going through.

Grieving can be a lonely process. No one else can grieve for you because you had a unique relationship with your loved one that no one else had.

Yet, despite the loneliness, we are not alone. We have Jesus.

The whole funeral process is good for our loved ones. It’s good to pray for the dead.

But, it’s also good for our grieving, too.

Go to the funeral home. Laugh and cry with family and friends. Attend the funeral Mass.

The greatest thing we can do for a loved one is to pray for him or her.

And the greatest prayer is the holy sacrifice of the Mass.

And then, pray.

Personally, I very consciously keep my loved ones in my daily prayer for at least a year after they pass.

Another good practice is to offer up masses for your loved one.

This could be in a private way. When you attend Mass, just make a little prayer offering it up for the soul of your loved one. This could be done in a more public way by contacting your parish and having a Mass offered for your loved one. The name will then be mentioned at Mass and all those in attendance will be praying.

When we grieve, the main thing is to keep our eyes on Jesus. When our eyes are on Jesus, we will be full of hope. When they start to drift, we start to lose our hope.

Let’s put our eyes back on the Lord. He is our hope, and it is into his hands that we set our loved ones.
