How do I obtain a plenary indulgence?
An indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sin, whose guilt has already been forgiven.
There are two types of indulgences: a partial indulgence that removes parts of the punishment due to sin, and a plenary indulgence, which removes it all.
You can apply indulgences to yourself or to someone who has passed away, not to another living person.
To obtain an indulgence, there are five factors: works, detachment, confession, communion, and prayers.
First, works. There are the traditional works, like praying the Stations of the Cross. But, during this jubilee year of hope, the Holy Follow is giving us many other possibilities.
Fast from social media, defend life, donate to the poor, volunteer, or the popular one right now, make a pilgrimage.
The Archdiocese of Detroit has designated 12 pilgrimage sites within the archdiocese. You could visit one per month.
Next, detachment. We have to be detached from all sin, even venial.
Thirdly, make a sacramental confession and then receive Holy Communion worthily.
Lastly, pray for the intentions of the Pope. An Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be will suffice.
These five things have to be done within about a month of each other. Personally, I find it’s better to keep them within about a week of each other.
A single confession can cover several indulgences, but each plenary indulgence needs its own work, communion, and prayers for the Pope.
Indulgences are a great way to have our own hearts purified
or to pull our loved ones out of purgatory.
I hope everyone takes advantage of indulgences during this Jubilee Year of Hope.
